2. The Horry County ROTC Drill Meet kicks off Military Appreciation Days Saturday, May 4. Everyone is welcome to watch 130 cadets from Horry County Schools compete at the annual JROTC Drill Meet at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, May 4, at the Pelicans Stadium parking lot, 1251 21st Avenue North. The event is free, and military recruiters will be on site to speak with students. A Military Family Members Social immediately follows the event for the cadets, their families and military members. The Drill Meet is the first of a series of military events in May. Military Appreciation Days is hosted by the City of Myrtle Beach, Military Appreciation Committee and Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. See the schedule of events below.
- Myrtle Beach Pelicans’ Military Appreciation Night (Pelicans vs. Augusta) – 6:05 p.m. game time, Saturday, May 11. (Card set veterans are recognized prior to the game).
- Military Appreciation Days Parade – 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 25. Along Farrow Parkway in The Market Common. Parade Registration forms and Band Registration forms are available here.
- Family Picnic (featuring live music by “Julio and the Saltines”) – 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 25, Valor Memorial Garden, 1120 Farrow Parkway.
- Jack Platt Veterans’ March with Battlefield Cross Ceremony – 9:00 a.m., Monday, May 27, Along Ocean Boulevard, 16th to Ninth Avenues North.
- Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony (featuring music by “Festive Brass”) – 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 27, Myrtle Beach Convention Center, 2101 North Oak Street.
- Military Documentary – 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 27, Grand 14 Cinema, 4002 DeVille Street
- MOAA Grand Strand Chapter’s Retired U.S. Col. Francis A. Esposito Golf Tournament – Tuesday, May 28, Blackmoor Golf Club, Murrells Inlet.
- Festive Brass Concert Performance – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 28, Ballroom ABC, Myrtle Beach Convention Center, 2101 North Oak Street.
4. Ocean Boulevard will be closed from Sixteenth to Ninth Avenues North beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, for the annual Omar Shriners Parade. The parade begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at approximately 10:00 a.m. That section of Ocean Boulevard will reopen as soon as the parade ends. The parade’s setup area, Fifteenth Avenue North and Chester Street, will be closed from 7:00 a.m. until the parade is over.
5. Fall sports registration opens at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, May 4, for youth football, cheerleading, baseball and softball. Fall sports take place August through November. Be sure to register online on Myrtle Beach’s Parks, Recreation and Sports Tourism website, MyrtleBeachPRST.com, under the “Youth Sports” tab. In-person registration is available at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center and Crabtree Memorial Gym. Here are the age categories for each sport:
- Football: Ages 7-8, Ages 9-10 and Ages 11-12
- Cheerleading: Ages 4-6 and Ages 7-12
- Baseball: Ages 4-6 Rookie League (Boys and Girls), Ages 6-8 Machine Pitch (Boys and Girls), Ages 9-10, Ages 11-12 and Ages 13-15
- Softball: Ages 8-10, Ages 11-12 and Ages 13-16
7. Construction crews will begin work Monday, May 6, to resurface 79th Avenue North and add a 10-foot-wide multipurpose path. The work will be completed along 79th Avenue North, between Highway 17 and Kings Highway. No road closures are planned, but lanes will be closed intermittently when resurfacing begins. This project is expected to take three months to complete, weather permitting.
8. The Myrtle Beach Classic, a PGA TOUR event, will debut Thursday, May 9, through Sunday, May 12, at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. There will be no major road closures in Myrtle Beach during the event. General parking will be Lot B of the former Myrtle Square Mall site, 2400 North Oak Street. Handicap/ADA parking will also be at the former Myrtle Square Mall site. Shuttles will transport spectators from the parking lot to the golf course and back. Spectators are encouraged to pay the $15 parking fee in advance. You can purchase parking day-of with cash or a credit card. - Rideshare drop off will be located at Lot B, 2400 North Oak Street. Rideshare vehicles will not be able to enter The Dunes Community. All spectators are asked to use the shuttles to and from the course and Lot B parking lot.
10. Thousands of spectators gathered at Grand Park Lake last weekend for Ground Zero’s 16th annual Dragon Boat Festival, and that’s the subject of our Photos of the Week. The charity event features 20 paddlers aboard each boat, racing to cross the finish line first. Spectators lined the lake to watch dozens of boats compete throughout the day. The Myrtle Beach Police Department made up one boat team, fundraising $1,950 for the event. The Dragon Boat Festival is not complete without vendors, food trucks and costume competitions. 11. Did you know… That the Myrtle Beach Tennis Center was renamed the Rivers F. Lynch Tennis Center in September 2022? The late Rivers F. Lynch was an Appalachian State University graduate with a degree in Physical Education. His teaching career included posts at Chesterfield, J.C. Lynch, North Myrtle Beach, Early College and Myrtle Beach High Schools. Lynch coached various sports, such as boys’ and girls’ basketball, volleyball, baseball, track and tennis. He was recognized as an extraordinary coach, both locally and nationally, with the following awards: SC Tennis Coach of the Year (1992); USTA Tennis Family of the Year (1994); SC Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2007); National Tennis Coach of the Year (2009); and, High School Sports Report Lifetime Achievement Award (2009). To Myrtle Beach High Seahawks and the Grand Strand community, Rivers Lynch was best known as an outstanding tennis coach. From 1991 to 2009, his teams won 11 Tennis State Championship Titles. He served as a positive force in his students’ lives in the classroom, and on and off the tennis courts. His sudden death in 2019 marked the loss of one of Myrtle Beach’s brightest stars.
