The September 11 Unity Memorial is being transferred to Warbird Park, where it will be more visible and available to the public. These pictures show the process of recreating the 9-11 memorial circle in a clearing adjacent to the F-100 Super Sabre. The contractor first installed the foundation, then transferred the granite disc and plinth upon which the steel beam from the World Trade Center will be remounted. The historic piece of steel was donated to the Myrtle Beach community by former FDNY firefighters in appreciation for the hospitality they received here in the months and years following September 11, 2001. The granite text inserts from the original memorial site on 28th Avenue North have been reinstalled, too. They tell the story of the terrorist attacks in New York and elsewhere, including the deaths of 343 New York firefighters who responded to the scene. The granite and cement will be pressure-washed, grouted and sealed in the next few weeks, in time for the 20th anniversary ceremony. New landscaping, flagpoles and benches will be added.
