Violent crime numbers continued their downward trend in 2019

Myrtle Beach Police Chief Amy Prock reported to City Council during Tuesday’s meeting that violent crimes dropped another 13 percent during 2019. In her annual report, Chief Prock also noted that burglaries and motor vehicle thefts declined significantly, too. In fact, both categories have dropped by more than 50 percent since 2013....

Larcenies, such as shoplifting, were up slightly in 2019. Chief Prock indicated the uptick was likely due to drug addiction, with people committing minor property crimes to support their habit.

As part of her annual report, Chief Prock noted that the Police Department is extremely pleased with the real-time camera system that keeps an eye on streets, intersections and public places. She said crimes are solved in minutes and hours, not weeks and months, thanks to the hundreds of cameras throughout the city.
