WW II Nurse Treva Greene is Honorary Grand Marshal for 2019 Military Appreciation Days Parade

Horry County resident and World War II US Army Nurse Treva Greene will serve as the Honorary Grand Marshal for the 2019 Military Appreciation Days Parade in Myrtle Beach at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 25.  She joins official Grand Marshal Keni Thomas, a former US Army Ranger and country music performer, in the annual parade, which winds its way through The Market Common on Farrow Parkway.  Both Greene and Thomas will meet the public and sign autographs after the parade at the Family Picnic in Valor Memorial Garden.

Born January 24, 1921, Greene describes herself as “a very mischievous and talkative child” who liked to jump rope and “play baseball with the boys.”  She entered the nursing profession at age 18, then became a US Army nurse during World War II.  She served for two years and four months, first at Camp Swift in Texas, and then was stationed in Fleetwood, England.  She describes England as “very rainy and cold.”  Working on the front lines, Treva saw everything from the Battle of the Bulge to Hitler’s secret hideout.

Following her military service, Treva returned to the United States where she met and married Vance Greene, whom she described as “striking, compassionate and gentle.”  A friend mentioned Vance to her, and she said she would date him if she could.  Fortunately, Vance called soon after, and they were married a few months later.  The Greenes moved to Conway, SC, in 1960, where Treva worked as an operating room nurse for 40 years until retiring in March 1991.

Treva Greene has two children, Coleen and Bucky.  Her daughter followed in her footsteps and became a nurse, too.  Greene is excited about riding in the Military Appreciation Days Parade as this year’s Honorary Grand Marshal and looks forward to meeting everyone at the Family Picnic afterwards.
