Dune preservation efforts paying-off for Myrtle Beach

JULY 20, 2022

We thought you’d want to see how Myrtle Beach is working with Mother Nature to maintain our beach. These “keep off the dunes” signs, buried in the sand, may not look like a success story, but they are! They were placed in 2019 when new sand fencing was installed and sea grass sprigs were planted, following a couple of hurricanes that flattened the beach. In three short years, the fencing and grass have trapped enough windblown sand to rebuild the dunes. In fact, so much sand has accumulated that you can barely see the signs. City staff will install new signs this summer to make sure that beachgoers continue to “keep off the dunes,” now that they are much taller and stronger.
