Myrtle Beach shelter receives donation of 70 bicycles

Coastal Carolina University’s “Rolling Forward Project” donated 70 bicycles to New Directions’ Men’s Shelter on Friday.  The "Rolling Forward Project" is an outreach effort organized by Stephanie Southworth, CCU Sociology Professor and her students.  The goal is to help those who are without a permanent home in the community with one of their greatest needs –transportation.  The project also allows students to engage with people from all walks of life and provide community service.

The City of Myrtle Beach donated 70 sets of bicycle lights (for front and rear fenders) and a couple of helmets.  Lights are required by state law for riding after dark.  The city also provided bicycle safety brochures which outline the rules of the road for riders.

New Directions is a non-profit organization operating four shelters under one umbrella, assisting people in crisis with food, shelter, recovery classes, job readiness classes, permanent housing assistance and long-term case management.
