The Myrtle Beach community is mourning the tragic loss of one of our police officers, 23-year-old Jacob Hancher, who was shot and killed in the line of duty. Hancher was responding to a domestic violence call on Saturday, October 3, 2020. Family, friends and coworkers grieved at the senseless loss. Several vigils were held during the week, and an impromptu memorial appeared at the Ted C. Collins Law Enforcement Center on Oak Street. People left flowers, notes and mementos. Local and state law enforcement officers escorted Hancher to and from the Medical University of South Carolina, with hundreds of people lining the streets in his honor. Even the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel shone law enforcement blue in memory of Jacob Hancher.
