A cemetery serving the African American community is getting some much-needed attention this spring from the city’s staff at Ocean Woods Cemetery.  The hidden burial site off 21st Avenue North was purchased by the city in 1992 in order to preserve it.  The earliest graves date to the mid-1930s, with military veterans from both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam interred there.  The cemetery has been cleaned previously, but the current effort will be the most extensive.  Kurt Klepper from the city’s Ocean Woods Cemetery is leading the effort.  Already, the overgrown and rusty perimeter fence has been removed and the property line is being cleared.  Grave markers will be leveled and raised, where necessary, and cleaned, too.  In all 243 graves were identified during a 2010 survey, although many were unmarked and unnamed.  Klepper hopes to change that with this most recent renovation, so consider this the “before” series of images.  Stay tuned for photos of the progress!
