The third annual Horry County Junior ROTC Drill Meet kicked off Military Appreciation Days in May. Teams competed at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans' Stadium, with the Navy JROTC program from North Myrtle Beach claiming overall honors. Members of the Myrtle Beach US Army Recruiting Office and the South Carolina National Guard served as judges for the event. JROTC teams competed in Color Guard, Armed and Unarmed Squad and Armed and Unarmed Platoon. This year, for the first time, the competition also included a Freshman Unarmed Squad. Students then took part in individual knock-out drills, armed and unarmed, responding to the instructor's commands. Everyone then enjoyed the Military Family Members' Social, a luncheon at the Pelicans' Picnic Area, sponsored by the Blue Star Mothers of Coastal Carolina and the Military Appreciation Committee.
