The 17th annual Palmetto Regional FIRST Robotics Tournament featured 63 teams of high school students from eight states in a Star Wars-themed competition at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Most of the Horry County High Schools were on hand, having built working robots from scratch in just six weeks. More than 2,000 students and another 1,000 parents and teachers were on hand for the fast-paced, two-day event. In between matches, students repaired their robots or made competitive improvements in the Pit area, which included NASA’s portable machine shop. The robotics tournament is an example of the “gracious professionalism” that FIRST teaches today’s youth.
