Oath of office ceremonies were held Tuesday for Myrtle Beach’s recently-elected mayor and Council members. Municipal Court Judge Glenn Ohanesian presided, administering the oaths to Mayor Brenda Bethune, Councilwoman Jackie Hatley and Councilmen Gregg Smith and Mike Lowder. The ceremony preceded the first regular Council meeting of 2022 at the Ted C. Collins Law Enforcement Center. This is a second term in office for Bethune, Hatley and Smith, and the fourth term for Lowder. During the meeting which followed, Council appointed Mike Chestnut as mayor pro tem for the next two years. Traditionally, the mayor pro tem is the Council member who received the most votes in the previous election.
