Nearly 90 prominent South Carolinians, past and present, are honored in the official South Carolina Hall of Fame at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.  Hall of Fame members include four South Carolinians who signed the Declaration of Independence, four who signed the U.S. Constitution, three astronauts, five medical doctors, five Ph.D.s, five generals and one Nobel Prize winner.  Charles Townes received the Nobel Prize for his part in the invention of the laser and maser.  Literacy advocates, artists, political figures and even a midwife are honored for their services to the state, nation and world.  Jazz great Dizzy Gillespie is a member of the Hall of Fame, as is 1960 World Series M.V.P. Bobby Richardson of the New York Yankees.  The late Pat Conroy, a well-known South Carolina author, also is a member.  The Hall of Fame was established in 1973.
