Myrtle Beach has two indoor swimming pools, one at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center and one at Mary C. Canty Recreation Center.  Both offer a variety of swim lessons, water exercise classes, competitive swimming, and certification courses.  Check out the listings below.  For more information, call the Aquatics Office at 843-918-2286 or 843-918-2280.

Hydroaerobics:  The perfect blend of water and workout!  This is a low impact, fast-paced aerobic program designed to improve heart-lung capacity, flexibility, and muscular strength.  The class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are needed.  Class meets from 9:00-9:45 a.m.. & 5:30-6:15 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents and $10 for non-city residents or get an 18-visit punch card for $32 (city resident) or $55 for (non-city resident).

Off the Deep End:  Jump into the deep end for a challenging water workout.  This is a high-intensity, non-impact aerobic exercise class.  Off the Deep End is an excellent cross-training and rehabilitative opportunity.  The water workout helps build core muscular strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness.  Class members wear buoyancy belts for added flotation but should be comfortable in deep water.  Classes meet  9:00-9:45 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents and $10 for non-city residents or get an 18-visit punch card for $32 (city resident) or $55 for (non-city resident).

Aqua Surge:  This class is a great, low-impact way to focus on improving your muscle tone and cardio.  The class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are necessary. This class is designed for all levels. Class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. Water shoes strongly recommended, but not required.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents and $10 for non-city residents or an 18-visit punch card is $32 for city residents and $55 for non-residents.

Jivin’ Joints:  This water exercise class is for an individual with a form of arthritis or related condition.  It offers a gentle range of motion and endurance activities under the guidance of an Arthritis Foundation-trained instructor. The class is suitable for “pre-hab” or “rehab” of hips and knees.  This is a beginner’s class at a slower pace.  Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15 to 11:00 a.m.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $10 for non-city residents or get an 18-visit punch card for $32 for city residents or $55 for non-city residents.

Swim lesson class descriptions.
Infant/Toddler Swim Class Ages
: Six months to Three years

Infant/Toddler – The American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics class builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.  Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more. **Special Requirements:  An adult must accompany the child in the water, and swim diapers are required for those children who are not potty-trained.

Pre-School Swim Class Ages: Three – Five years

Pre-School 1 – This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  It is for non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable putting their face in the water.

Pre-School 2 – This class is for children who are comfortable in the water, can put their face in, but are not yet swimming or floating (front and back) on their own.

Pre-School 3 – This class is for children who are very comfortable in the water, can front and back float for at least 5 seconds with NO assistance, and are swimming on their own with NO assistance or floatation device.

Advanced Pre-School – This class is for children who can swim on their front and back for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds with no assistance. They should be comfortable in the deep water.

Youth Swim Classes Ages:  Six-twelve years

Level 1 – This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  Non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable with their face in the water belong in this class.

Level 2 – This class is for children with some water experience that are comfortable putting their faces in the water but are not yet swimming on their own.

Level 3 – This class is for children who can swim and float unassisted on both the front and back but are just beginning to work on strokes.

Level 4 – This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds.

Level 5 – This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of front and back crawl, as well as 15 yards of breaststroke and elementary backstroke.

Year-round recreational swimming
Grand Strand Recreational Swim League

The Myrtle Beach Marlins Swim Team is a great way to continue to improve your swimming skills.  The Marlins are a year-round recreational swim team focusing on the fundamentals of swimming, training, and building friendships, all while having fun.  Swimmers are placed into groups based on ability, age and practice attendance.  A variety of practice times will be available to meet your schedule.  The Marlins compete in the Grand Strand Recreational Swim League (GSSL).  Fees range from $30 to $65 per month, plus an annual registration fee.  Please note that all swimmers pay an annual registration fee of $14 for city residents or $25 for non-city residents.  For more information or questions regarding tryouts, please contact head coach Kaitlyn Earnest at 843-918-2288 or kearnest@cityofmyrtlebeach.com.

   lifeguard seal    Lifeguard Certification Courses          

In the Lifeguard Training course, you will be taught the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and to prevent drowning and injuries.

Pre-Registration is strongly recommended.  A $20 Non-Refundable Deposit is due at the time of registration.  This deposit will be applied to course fees upon successful completion of the Pre-Course Session and includes pool use from registration through the end of class.  (See lap swim schedule.)

The Course Fee is $110 for City Residents and $185 for Non-City Residents and includes certification (if all coursework is completed satisfactorily) and a pocket mask. Please make checks payable to the City of Myrtle Beach. Space is limited so register early!

Lifeguard Pre-Course Session
All of the following must be completed prior to starting the lifeguard course.  Be prepared to swim the distance the first night!

  • Proof that you will be at least 15 years old (drivers license or birth certificate) by the scheduled course completion date.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously, face in the water using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick.
  • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return with the object to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with both hands holding the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute, 40 seconds without goggles.
  • Tread water continuously for 2 minutes using only your legs.


 Water Safety Instructor Courses

In the Water Safety Instructor Training course, you will be taught the knowledge and skills needed to plan and teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program.  You will be given practice-teaching assignments, which will give you experience in presenting information and teaching skills to course candidates, conducting classes and evaluating skills. 

Coursework will include physical exercise. Online, classroom and take home assignments to require attentiveness to reading and lectures.  
The Pre-Course consists of the following skills test:

Swim the following strokes consistent with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4 stroke Performance Criteria:

  • Front crawl – 25 yards
  • Back crawl – 25 yards
  • Breaststroke – 25 yards
  • Elementary backstroke – 25 yards
  • Sidestroke – 25 yards
  • Butterfly – 15 yards

Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling). Tread water for 1 minute. Proof that you will be at least 16 years old by the scheduled course completion date.

Course Fee:  $115 City Residents/$195 Non-City
