If a hurricane threatens Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand, an evacuation may be ordered for everyone's safety.  Depending on the severity of the storm, the evacuation may be either voluntary or mandatory.  Details, including the area to be evacuated, will be announced, so follow news and weather reports closely.  Evacuation routes for the Myrtle Beach area are posted at left.  See the Hurricane Preparedness Plan for more information. 

Below is a list of emergency evacuation shelters in Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties, if you have no other place to go when a storm is approaching.  Some shelters will be opened for a voluntary evacuation, as indicated, while many others will be opened for a mandatory evacuation.  If you must go to a shelter, the Red Cross requests that you bring the following:

• A patient and cooperative attitude

• Lawn chairs or cots

• Prescription medication

• Flashlight, batteries, and headphones

• Personal hygiene items

However, DO NOT bring these items to an emergency shelter:

• A negative or demanding attitude

• Coolers or candles

• Alcoholic drinks, illegal drugs or weapons

• Pets

Please be aware that smoking is NOT permitted in the shelters.

SPECIAL MEDICAL NEEDS SHELTERS (SMNS)

These shelters are operated by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).  SMNS are designed as shelters of last resort.  They are for those who require special care that cannot be provided at a regular shelter, but who do not require hospitalization.  If at all possible, people with special medical needs should seek shelter with relatives, friends or at a hotel outside of the evacuation area.  For more information or for help in determining if a Special Medical Needs Shelter is right for you, call (843) 915-8804.
