Administrative Division - Taxi Cab Ordinances

The growth of our city has caused an increase in the number of taxicabs operating within the City of Myrtle Beach.  Several years ago, City Council amended the city ordinance regulating the taxicab industry.  The Taxi Enforcement Officer is the primary enforcer of the taxi ordinance.  Each taxicab must be inspected annually to ensure that the taxi meets the standards set forth by ordinance.  The ordinance also mandates that the officer conduct random inspections on the taxicabs throughout the year.  There are over 100 certified cabs operating within the City of Myrtle Beach.  The Taxi Enforcement Officer also issues a Chauffeur’s Permit to the driver of each taxicab.  This permit must be in the driver’s possession and displayed while he/she is operating the taxicab.  This permit allows a driver to pick-up a fare within the City of Myrtle Beach while driving a certified taxicab.

If you are interested in obtaining a Taxi Certificate or a Chauffeur’s Permit, some links have been provided below assist you with the proper procedures.

Chauffeur’s Permit

New

Applicants 21 years of age or older who wish to obtain a Chauffeur’s Permit for the first time are required to submit the following documents:

  • A completed City of Myrtle Beach Chauffeur’s Permit application.  Failure to complete each section of the application could result in denial of a permit.

  • Applicants are required to submit a ten-year driving record from the SC Department of Motor Vehicles.  If the applicant has not resided in South Carolina for ten-years, a certified driving record is required from the state where the applicant previously resided, along with the driving record from South Carolina.

  • All applicants are required to attach a criminal records check from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).  SLED charges a fee of $25.00 to obtain this document.  If the applicant has not resided in South Carolina for ten-years, a certified criminal records check is required from the state or municipality where the applicant previously resided, along with the criminal records check from SLED.

Once all required documents are complete, the Taxi Enforcement Officer reviews applications on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m..  If the officer approves the application, the applicant will be given a fee form for $50.  All fees are to be paid at the Water Billing Department, City Services Building, 921 Oak St.  Receipts may be brought back to the annex between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to receive the permit.

Renewal

To renew a Chauffeur’s Permit that has not expired, a completed City of Myrtle Beach Chauffeur’s Permit application is required, along with a three-year driving record and an updated SLED report.  The Taxi Enforcement officer reviews applications on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.  If the officer approves the renewal application, the applicant will be given a fee form for $50.  All fees are to be paid at the Water Billing Department, City Services Building, 921 Oak St.  Receipts may be brought back to the annex between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to receive the renewal permit.

  • If Chauffeur’s Permit has expired, please refer to the instructions for a new permit.

Certificate of Convenience and Necessity

It is unlawful to engage in a taxi business within the city limits of Myrtle Beach unless the taxicab has been issued a certificate by City Council.  Applications for a certificate are only accepted in January of each year.  A nonrefundable processing fee is required to be submitted with a completed application. A ten-year driving record and a criminal records check from SLED must be attached to all applications.  Once an application is submitted, it will be forwarded to City Council for their review and consideration.

  • January is open application period for new medallions.  Completed applications must be received by January 31, 2008.

  • All applicants must obtain a "Fee Payment Sheet" from our Taxi Coordinator before the city will accept payment for the application fee.

  • Applications will only be considered received when they are complete and all applicable documentation is attached.
