Police Department

Uniform Patrol Division - Road Patrol

The Road Patrol Section is the "core" of the department and are primarily the first to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.  In 2004, the department responded to 97,975 calls for service.  As of May 31, 2005, the department has responded to 41,006 calls for service. The Road Patrol Officers routinely conduct preliminary investigations of crimes, enforce traffic laws, and promote safety in Myrtle Beach.  These officers are also tasked with conducting keep checks on residences where the owners are out of town as well as keep checks on businesses during non-business hours.  Our department currently has three shifts working ten-hour shifts.  These officers are all graduates of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy and have completed field training with an experienced Field Training Officer.

Our patrol officers emphasize on community policing techniques and are required to complete directed patrols in their areas on a daily basis. This allows the officers to become even more familiar with our community and employees of businesses in their area as well as the community getting to know our officers.

At the beginning of each shift, the officers attend a briefing where they receive pertinent information such as wanted persons, runaways, missing persons, etc. Our patrol vehicles are equipped with Laptop Computers, which allow officers to receive their calls with all the dispatched information readily available to them on their laptops.  The officers are also able to quickly check the status of a vehicle or person by simply entering some basic information into the terminal.  The laptops also allow officers to complete Uniform Crime Reports in the comfort of their patrol car eliminating the need for them to leave their vehicle to do these reports.  Once the officer has completed the report, he simply electronically sends his report to his supervisor for approval.  These terminals have been a great asset in saving time and in locating missing persons, wanted persons and recovering stolen vehicles and/or items.

If you have a question regarding the Patrol Section, call the Patrol Lieutenant at 843-918-1393 or e-mail Lt. Tommy Chestnut at tchestnut@cityofmyrtlebeach.com
