Police Department

Narcotics Section

The investigation of drug and vice related activities in the Myrtle Beach area is the responsibility of the Myrtle Beach Police Department’s Narcotics and Vice Section. This Section, made up of 6 Narcotics Officers, works with the community and other law enforcement agencies as well as other Divisions within the Department, providing a pro-active law enforcement. The Narcotics and Vice Section utilizes community input and involvement as well as other agencies' and officers’ information to assess problem areas within the City. The objective for the Section is to work together to evaluate and implement operational plans to target drug and vice trouble spots in the City and eliminate the actions of repeat offenders. Some of the activities the Section is involved in include surveillance, federal task force operations, undercover drug buys, street level prostitution and gambling operations. This work includes a great deal of research and patience due to the intensity, seriousness and clandestine nature of the offenses.

In addition to hands-on operations, the Narcotics and Vice Section also works with the community to provide drug education. These programs include officers attending classes at public schools and colleges to present information focusing on different types of drugs and the effects of taking them. The presentation also includes an overview of State and Federal laws pertaining to drug offenses.

Training is important in all aspects of policing. Due to the fact that the Narcotics and Vice Section is a specialized Section, Narcotics Officers need to be trained to investigate drug and vice related incidents. This training focuses on undercover investigations, surveillance techniques, case investigation, as well as drug analysis training. Most of the training is administered through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

The Narcotics and Vice Section is available to take reports of drug and vice related incidents and complaints. They can be contacted by phone at (843) 918-1950. This phone line is the office line for the supervisor of the Section, Cpl. Guthinger. In the event there is no one in the office, a voice mail will pick up and you will be able to leave a message. This line is for non-emergency calls only. Cpl. Guthinger can also be reached by e-mail at gguthinger@cityofmyrtlebeach.com.  The information that is most valuable in reporting suspected narcotics violations are a complete address, a complete description of the subjects involved to include name, gender, race, approximate age or date of birth, height, weight, hair color and distinguishing traits. Other information that is necessary includes any vehicle information (make, model, color, year, vehicle registration) as well as time frame of suspicious activity (specific times like 10:00 PM to 1:00 AM).

The best tool for the fight against illegal drugs is knowledge. Knowledge of the different types of drugs that an individual can encounter as well as the abuse of both prescription drugs and illegal narcotics is of the utmost importance to prevent abuse and addiction. The Drug Enforcement Administration provides a significant amount of information focusing on the different types of drugs in our society today.
