Police Department

Administrative Division - Crime Prevention/Crime Analysis

The Crime Prevention Unit is assigned to the Administrative Section of the Myrtle Beach Police Department and has one State Certified Officer who serves the community in crime prevention.  The Unit is designed to promote prevention and deterrence of crime by providing informative facts and preventative materials as well as various other responsibilities.

The Crime Prevention Unit has developed certain standard operating procedures to follow-up and coordinate proactive contacts with victims of residential/business burglaries and robberies.  Measures are suggested in order to decrease victimization and reduce the risk of re-victimization.

The proactive approach to deter or reduce crime is intended to enhance community involvement in the identification and resolution of criminal activity by the development, implementation and maintenance of community oriented programs.  These programs include Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, Postal Watch and Fleet Watch.  The Crime Watch Programs allow the community to take a more active role by reporting suspicious activities.

Other programs the Crime Prevention Unit is involved in include HOT FAX.  This program is designed to alert businesses of business related complaints or crime prevention information.  The Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce is contacted via fax of these related incidences who then fax all of their members.  Areas of potential problems include robberies, burglaries, information of fraudulent checks and known professional shoplifting rings.  By informing the local businesses, they are less likely to be victimized.

Project I.D. is another program the Crime Prevention Unit participates in.  Project I.D. is a citizen's burglary prevention program which involves marking property with an identifying number.  It works to discourage burglary because easily identified property is hard for a burglar to sell.   The Crime Prevention Unit assigns the citizen a special I.D. number to use.   The citizen then engraves the number into the valuable article.  The Crime Prevention Unit maintains and records the numbers for the citizens of the community.

The Crime Prevention Unit has several other programs to offer.  The Unit prepares presentations on items of interest to the community to include safety, personal protection and home security surveys. Should you want more information on any of our programs, please call Pfc. Shannon Toole at 843-918-1806 or e-mail him at stoole@cityofmyrtlebeach.com.

Our security report is for security officers around the city to view and take note of incidents that they be able to assist our department by being extra eyes and ears for our officers.  The report shows incidents of interests over the past 24 hours and is normally updated daily to exclude weekends.
