Session #17 of the Citizens Police Academy is underway.
The first Citizens' Police Academy began in September 2000; and the response from the participants was so great, we knew there was no turning back. The Academy was created to provide our residents and business people with an opportunity to meet and take a look at local law enforcement. Our hope is that participants will obtain a sense of how we serve them and the community, and how the citizen might help us serve more effectively. The Myrtle Beach Police Department offers a Spring and Fall session. Classes meet on Monday evenings from 7:00-9:00 pm for a total of 10 weeks. While attending the Academy will not certify you to be a police officer, you will gain a better understanding of police work and have a lot of fun along the way. Academy classes are taught by veteran police officers. Some of the topics covered are: Driving Under the Influence (Law & exercise), Crime Scene Investigation, Crime Prevention, Criminal Domestic Violence, Gun safety, Firearms Simulations, and more. We have introduced an optional Saturday class for participants to allow more time for special (fun) topics. Applications for our CPA are available at our main Police Department located at 1101 Oak Street or at our Annex located at 3340 Mustang St. on the old Air Force Base.
