Do firefighters float?  Yes, and very well, thank you.  With all the water around here, it's a good idea for firefighters to know they can float if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly.  Myrtle Beach firefighters recently completed a water survivability class at Canal Street Recreation Center.  Part of the lesson required them to fall into the water while fully dressed in 90 pounds of clothing, boots and equipment.  While their turnout gear is heavy, if they relax, the clothing traps enough air to keep them buoyant, allowing them to paddle slowly to safety.  Firefighters also practiced throwing a line to a stranded swimmer, just in case.
