The annual Bi-Lo Myrtle Beach Marathon would not be possible without the city staff's long hours and hard work. From 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., teams from Parks and Public Works make the course appear, then disappear. For the race itself, police officers are on duty to lead the way, answer questions and direct traffic. Fire and EMS personnel are called into service where needed. Once the excitement is over at the starting line and the sun is rising, city staff pick up hundreds of items of discarded clothing and pieces of trash. In all, it takes a literal convoy of vehicles and more than a hundred people from virtually every department to make the marathon happen each year. By day's end, you would never know that thousands of people had run 26.2 miles through the city.
