With nearly 14 million visitors a year,
the Myrtle Beach area is one of the most popular tourist destinations in
the country. Our rapid growth includes new tourist venues such as
Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing, as well as live theaters,
Ripley’s Aquarium, more than 100 golf courses, and a host of other
activities. The Myrtle Beach Convention Center, with a new on-site
Radisson Plaza hotel, adds another source of visitors to Myrtle Beach.
By its proximity to these attractions, downtown is in a strategic location for capturing segments of the tourism, second-home-buyer and retiree markets. To date, though, downtown has not kept pace with the area's rapid growth. Development has occurred to the north, south and west, following residential and tourism-related projects developed outside the downtown. The City of Myrtle Beach and local property owners are concerned about the decline in the number of families visiting the downtown area. A general decline in the type and variety of merchandise offered, a lack of variety in eating establishments and generally poor building maintenance all add to the perception that the area is in decline. The vision, then, for revitalizing downtown is to create a contemporary identity and sense of place based upon its traditional and historical key attributes and values. Specifically, these are:
