CITY COUNCIL


The Myrtle Beach City Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.  The workshop is at 9 a.m., followed by the regular meeting at 2 p.m.

Corner Icon The seven-member Myrtle Beach City Council includes six council members and a mayor, all elected at-large for staggered, four-year terms.  City Council hires the City Manager, who is the chief executive officer for the city.  City Council also appoints various boards, commissions and committees to assist with the work of governing.

JOHN T. RHODES

Mayor

Mr. Rhodes was elected Mayor in 2005 and 2009 and re-elected in 2013 for a term of office that will extend to January 2018.  Mr. Rhodes, who attended University of South Carolina (Coastal Carolina), is Executive Director of the Beach Ball Classic, an organization that annually produces a prestigious holiday invitational basketball tournament for high school teams from around the United States.  He has previously owned and operated various businesses in the hospitality industry in Myrtle Beach.  He has served as General Manager of a major local resort hotel and as Assistant Sales Director for the Hilton Myrtle Beach.  Prior to his election as Mayor, he served on the Board of Directors of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center Hotel Corporation and, before the 1993 expansion, served on the Convention Center Advisory Board.

MICHAEL CHESTNUT

Mr. Chestnut, a real estate agent and restaurateur, took office in November 2000 following his election to Council and was re-elected in 2003, 2007 and 2011.  His current term continues until January 2016.  A long-time resident and businessperson in the Myrtle Beach community, Mr. Chestnut owns and operates a restaurant in the downtown area.  He served on the Myrtle Beach Housing Authority prior to his election to City Council.

W.  WAYNE GRAY

Mr. Gray, a Senior Vice-President with Tidelands Bank and owner of local restaurants, served on Council from 1998-2002 and was elected and re-elected in 2005, 2009 and 2013.  His current term of office runs to January 2018.  Prior to his first election, Mr. Gray served on the City’s Tourism Committee, chairing its Financial Considerations Subcommittee.  He is a former Chairman of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.  Mr. Gray earned a B.S. in Finance from Presbyterian College.

CLYDE H. “MIKE” LOWDER

Mr. Lowder was elected to City Council in 2009 and re-elected in 2013 for a term of office that will expire in January 2018.  Prior to his election, he served on the City’s Board of Zoning Appeals.  Mr. Lowder is a graduate of Horry-Georgetown Technical College with a degree in Criminal Justice.  He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, then worked for more than 26 years in the Myrtle Beach Police Department and Horry County Sheriff’s Office, completing his public law enforcement career as Chief Deputy of the Sheriff’s Office.  Mr. Lowder became a private investigator and is now Vice-President of Excalibur Security & Investigations.

SUSAN GRISSOM MEANS

Ms. Means is self-employed as a management consultant.  She was elected to Council in November 1999 and has served continuously since then.  Her current term of office will expire in January 2016.  She attended the University of South Carolina (Coastal Carolina), is a graduate of Leadership Grand Strand, former president of the Myrtle Beach Women’s Club and is active in a number of community and charitable organizations.

PHILIP N. RENDER, DMD

Dr. Render is Dean of Academic Affairs at Horry-Georgetown Technical College and a dentist with a private practice in Surfside Beach, SC.  He was first elected to Council in November 2003 and re-elected in 2007 and  2011.  His current term of office will expire in January 2016.  Dr. Render is a graduate of Wofford College and the Medical University of South Carolina.

RANDAL WALLACE

Mr. Wallace, a real estate agent at Waccamaw Land & Timber, served on the Myrtle Beach Zoning Board of Adjustments prior to his election to City Council in November 2001.  He was re-elected in 2005, 2009 and 2013.  His current term of office expires in January 2018.  Mr. Wallace has earned degrees from Spartanburg Methodist College (A.A.) and Lander University (B.S. in History & Political Science, B.A. in Mass Communication).  He is active in a number of community and charitable organizations.
