Canal Street Recreation Center offers recreational opportunities for all ages, with a gymnasium, weight room, swimming pool, game rooms, playgrounds and a banquet hall with kitchen and ice machine.  Youth sports, after-school youth programs and special events also are available.  Choose from annual, monthly or daily membership options. 

 

The following classes and activities are available, with pre-registration  required.  For more information, call Canal Street Recreation Center at 843-918-1465 or come by the center and sign up!  The center is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

 

Triathlon Camp

Grades 2 through 9

August 11-15, 2014

This poplar camp for fit youngsters is now available at Canal Street Recreation Center, too!  This camp, August 11-15, will focus on the three disciplines that make up a triathlon:  swimming, biking and running. Each day will consist of training in the pool, biking the block around Canal Street and running throughout the complex. The camp will conclude with a Kid’s Triathlon at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center on Saturday, August 16, beginning at 8:00 a.m. 

 

* Kids ages 7-10 will swim 100 yards, bike 5k and run 1k

* Kids ages 11-14 will swim 200 yards, bike 10k and run 2k

 

Teen Coaching 101

Registration is Underway

We’re looking for teenagers, ages 13 – 18, to serve as youth coaches for basketball and flag football.  This program is designed to get teenagers involved in the community.  It will offer lessons on coaching styles, drills, practice plans and leadership. Registration ends June 9.  Program days are Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m., from June 16 – 19. Games will be played 12:00 – 2:00 p.m., although the schedule is to be determined. Call 918-1472 or email eboyzo@cityofmyrtlebeach.com for more information.

 

Hook-a-Kid on Golf

Here’s a chance to introduce your children to the game of golf.  Registration continues through June 30 for youngsters, ages six through 12.  Participants will travel to Whispering Pines Golf Course every Wednesday and work with a golf pro to learn the fundamentals of golf.  The program begins the week of July 9 and is limited to 15 kids. Arena Football:  This flag football program is for children, age six to 12.  It gives them the opportunity to enhance their football skills and develop fundamentals for the game of football.  Registration is underway through June 20.  Training camps begin the week of June 23, and the league start date is June 30.  Fees $8 City Residents/$15 Non-Residents. Teen Basketball:  Ages 13 through 17 have the opportunity to compete in an organized summer basketball league.  Registration is underway through June 13.  Training camps begin the week of June 16, and league play officially starts on July 1.  Fees $8 City Residents/$15 Non-City Residents. Senior Bingo:  Come play Senior Bingo from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., every Tuesday through April 29, at Canal Street Recreation Center.  Just bring a dollar gift for the prize table.  For more information, call 918-1465.

 

Cardio and Abs:  This is a high intensity workout that will focus on core strength and cardio. Class will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 – 1:45 pm.  Drop – In Fees: $4 City Resident / $10 Non-City Resident.  Punch Cards can be used, fees $28.00 City Resident/$50.00 Non-City Resident.  For more information, contact Antonio Sullivan at 918-1469 or asullivan@cityofmyrtlebeach.com.

 

Old School vs. New School Basketball League:  A basketball league that gives youth the opportunity to learn and compete with veteran basketball players.  Games days begin March 31 on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Registration begins on December 9.  Fees for youth (14-17) are $10 City Resident/$20 Non-Resident.  Fees for adults are $20 City Resident/$35 Non-City Resident.    For more information contact Antonio Sullivan at 918-1469 or asullivan@cityofmyrtlebeach.com.

 

Ship into Shape: This is a high intensity running program that will teach participants how to run properly. The program will consist of plyometric drills and running.  Classes will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. and 6:00 – 6:45 p.m., January 6 through May 23. No Friday Evening Classes. A.M. Fitness Program:  This is low impact exercise program designed for individuals with disabilities and special needs. This program will give participants the opportunity to work out, interact with others, take part in a group activity, and have fun.  Class begins January 14 and runs through May 22, every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.    Fees:  $8 City Resident / $15 Non City Resident. Sit & Fit Workout:  Sit & Fit is a low impact workout program geared towards active Senior adults looking for a total body workout.  Classes are 11:00 a.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, January 6 through May 23.  Senior Daily Fees per class are $2 City Resident or $5 Non-City Resident.  Punch Card fees are $28 City Resident or $50 Non-City Resident.  For more information, call 918-1469 or e-mail asullivan@cityofmyrtlebeach.com.

 

SWIM LESSONS

 

Sign up now for swim lessons at Canal Street Pool!  Water safety is a skill that saves lives.  Registration begins on Thursday two weeks prior to the start of class, or call 918-1476 or 918-1463 for more information.  Swim lessons are available for all ages.

Class Infant/Toddler and Pre-school

 

Infant/Toddler - Developed for children 6 months to 3 years of age: American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.  Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more. **Special Requirements:  An adult must accompany the child in the water, and swim diapers are required for those children who are not potty-trained.

 

Pre-School 1 - This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  It is for non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable putting their face in the water.

 

Pre-School 2 - This class is for children who are comfortable in the water, can put their face in,

but are not yet swimming or floating (front and back) on their own.

 

Pre-School 3 - This class is for children who are very comfortable in the water, can front and back float for at least 5 seconds with NO assistance, and are swimming on their own with NO assistance or floatation device.

 

Youth Swim Classes Age:  Six-12 years

 

Level 1 – This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  Non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable with their face in the water belong in this class.

 

Level 2 – This class is for children with some water experience who are comfortable putting their faces in the water, but are not yet swimming on their own.

 

Level 3 – This class is for children who can swim and float unassisted on both the front and back, but are just beginning to work on strokes.

 

Level 4 – This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds.

 

Level 5 – This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of front and back crawl, as well as 15 yards of breaststroke and elementary backstroke.

 

AQUATIC FITNESS CLASSES  (Aqua Fitness Newsletter!)

 

Water exercise is an excellent way to a fit and healthy body!  The added resistance of the water offers the opportunity to improve flexibility and muscle strength without joint stress.  Our certified water exercise instructors will take you through exercise in the water, often using buoyant equipment for balance, stabilization and added resistance.  Whatever an individual’s fitness goals or therapeutic needs, they can be met with the right mix of classes. All classes are taught by Aquatic Instructors certified through the Aquatic Exercise Association.  Contact Ryan Caputo at 918-1476 for more information.

 

Aqua Power:   This class is a great, low-impact way to focus on improving your muscle tone and cardio.  Class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are necessary. This class is designed for all levels. Class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m. Water shoes strongly recommended, but not required.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents and $10 for non-city residents or an 18-visit punch card is $32 for city residents and $55 for non-residents.

 

Aqua Zumba: Known as the Zumba® “pool party,” the Aqua Zumba program gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Splashing, stretching, twisting, even shouting, laughing, hooting and hollering are often heard during an Aqua Zumba class. The Aqua Zumba class blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief.  Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday at 9:00a.m. at Canal Street Recreation Center. Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents and $10 for non-city residents, or get an 18 visit punch card for $32 for city residents and $55 for non-city residents.

 

Jivin’ Joints:  This class has been reformatted to add some cardio fitness to the range of motion exercises performed in the Gentle Joints class. This is the perfect transition from injury into our more intense water fitness classes. Class meets Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10:15 – 11:00 a.m.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $10 for non-city residents or get an 18-visit punch card for $32 for city residents or $55 for non-city residents.

 

Gentle Joints:  This water exercise class is designed for individuals with a form of arthritis or related condition. Gentle Joints offers gentle range of motion and endurance activities under the guidance of an Arthritis Foundation trained instructor. This class is suitable for “pre-hab” or “re-hab” of hips and knees. This class focuses on functional skills, core stability and balance. Class meets Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 10:15 – 11:00 a.m.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $10 for non-city residents or get an 18-visit punch card for $32 for city residents or $55 for non-city residents.
