Canal Street Recreation Center offers recreational opportunities for all ages, with a gymnasium, weight room, swimming pool, game rooms, playgrounds and a banquet hall with kitchen and ice machine.  Youth sports, after-school youth programs and special events also are available.  Choose from annual, monthly or daily membership options. 

 

The center is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

 

Teen Coaching 101 (ages 13-18)

Calling all teenagers, ages 13-18, who have an interest in coaching!  This program aims to get teenagers involved by serving as youth coaches for basketball and flag football.  Participants will receive training about coaching, conducting drills, creating practice plans and developing positive leadership.  As youth coaches, they will receive a salary for the season, monthly membership and a dinner, and a special bonus at season's end.  Registration runs from May 1 through June 12.  The coaching program is June 15 through July 31, on either a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., with games played from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.  For more information, call Edwin Boyzo at 843-918-1472.  A print-on-demand flyer is available.

 

Summer Youth 6-12 Basketball League

Registration for the Summer Youth Basketball League at Canal Street Recreation Center begins Friday, May 1, and continues until June 12.  The league’s primary purpose is to help kids develop fundamentals of basketball, but it also teaches youth the importance of sportsmanship, leadership, discipline and team work. Training camp will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., June 15-18, with league play beginning on June 30.  Games will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 to 3:00 p. m. Hey, kids!  Looking for some summer football fun?  Registration for Arena Football at Canal Street Recreation Center begins Friday, May 1, and continues until June 19.  Ages 6-12 are welcome in this flag football program that will help develop the fundamentals of football, with an emphasis on teamwork.  A mini-camp to work on drills and conditioning will be held June 22-25.  League play begins June 29, with games held Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.   held from June 22 – 25 to work on drills and conditioning prior to league beginning. Summer Teen Basketball League

Registration for the Summer Teen Basketball League at Canal Street Recreation Center begins Friday, May 1, and end Junes 12.  This program will help youth learn the fundamentals of basketball and teach the importance of sportsmanship, leadership, discipline and teamwork within the game. “Splash without Cash” Water Safety, June 1 – 4...  The City of Myrtle Beach offers the “Splash without Cash” program to teach water safety and survival to young kids, ages five – 12, in our community.  It is important that children have the knowledge necessary to save themselves should they fall into a body of water.  This free, week-long program is for non-swimmers.  Pre-registration is required, and space is limited.  Call 918-1463 to sign up or visit www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com/aquatics.html for more information.

 

Week-long class is June 1-4 (Please select one of these class times.)  4:00 – 4:45 p.m., 4:50 – 5:35 p.m., 5:40 – 6:25 p.m., 6:30 – 7:15 p.m.

 

Cardio and Abs:  This is a high intensity workout that will focus on core strength and cardio. Class will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 – 1:45 pm.  Drop-In Fees: $4 City Resident / $10 Non-City Resident.  Punch Cards can be used, fees $28.00 City Resident/$50.00 Non-City Resident.  For more information, contact 918-1465.

Class Infant/Toddler Swim Class Age: Six months to Three years

 

Infant/Toddler – The American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.  Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more. **Special Requirements:  An adult must accompany the child in the water, and swim diapers are required for those children who are not potty-trained.

 

Pre-School Swim Class Age: Three – Six years

 

Pre-School 1 This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  It is for non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable putting their face in the water.

 

Pre-School 2 This class is for children who are comfortable in the water, can put their face in,

but are not yet swimming or floating (front and back) on their own.

 

Pre-School 3 This class is for children who are very comfortable in the water, can front and back float for at least 5 seconds with NO assistance, and are swimming on their own with NO assistance or floatation device.

 

Advanced Pre-School – This class is for children who can swim on their front and back for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds with no assistance. They should be comfortable in the deep water.

 

Youth Swim Classes Age:  Six-12 years

 

Level 1 – This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  Non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable with their face in the water belong in this class.

 

Level 2 – This class is for children with some water experience that are comfortable putting their faces in the water, but are not yet swimming on their own.

 

Level 3 – This class is for children who can swim and float unassisted on both the front and back, but are just beginning to work on strokes.

 

Level 4 – This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds.

 

Level 5 – This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of front and back crawl, as well as 15 yards of breaststroke and elementary backstroke.

AQUATIC FITNESS CLASSES 

 

Water exercise is an excellent way to a fit and healthy body!  The added resistance of the water offers the opportunity to improve flexibility and muscle strength without joint stress.  Our certified water exercise instructors will take you through exercise in the water, often using buoyant equipment for balance, stabilization and added resistance.  Whatever an individual’s fitness goals or therapeutic needs, they can be met with the right mix of classes. All classes are taught by Aquatic Instructors certified through the Aquatic Exercise Association.  Contact Ryan Caputo at 918-1476 for more information.

 

Aqua Power:  This class is a great, low-impact way to focus on improving your muscle tone and cardio.  Class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are necessary. This class is designed for all levels. Class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m. Water shoes strongly recommended, but not required.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents and $10 for non-city residents or an 18-visit punch card is $32 for city residents and $55 for non-residents.

 

Gentle Joints:  This water exercise class is for individual with a form of arthritis or related condition.  It offers a gentle range of motion and endurance activities under the guidance of an Arthritis Foundation-trained instructor. The class is suitable for “pre-hab” or “re-hab” of hips and knees.  This is a beginner’s class, similar to Jivin’ Joints, but at a slower pace.  Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15 – 11:00 a.m.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $10 for non-city residents or get an 18-visit punch card for $32 for city residents or $55 for non-city residents.

BANQUET HALL

Canal Street Recreation Center's banquet hall can hold up to 300 people and can be divided into smaller spaces.  A full kitchen is available.  For more information about reserving the banquet hall for your next event, call the center at 843- 918-1465.  Here are photos of the hall decorated and undecorated.
