Corner Icon Swimming lessons for all ages...  Registration is underway for American Red Cross swim lessons at Pepper Geddings and Canal Street  Recreation Centers.  Classes are available for ages six months and up.  See the Aquatics page for details.

Canal Street Recreation Center offers recreational opportunities for all ages, with a gymnasium, weight room, swimming pool, game rooms, playgrounds and a banquet hall with kitchen and ice machine.  Youth sports, after-school youth programs and special events also are available.  Choose from annual, monthly or daily membership options. 


The following classes and activities are available, with pre-registration  required.  For more information, call Canal Street Recreation Center at 843-918-1465 or come by the center and sign up!  The center is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.


NETA Personal Trainer Certification, March 28-29:  Join the NETA Personal Trainer Certification two-day workshop Saturday and Sunday, March 28-29, at Canal Street Recreation Center, 971 Canal Street.  This two-day workshop includes: demonstrations and practical application of one-on-one training.  NETA’s expert trainer will cover exercise science review, communication skills, exercise programming, health assessments and more.  Workshop registration includes written exam and two-year certificate.  NETA’s Personal Trainer Certification is accredited by NCAA, the “gold standard” in our industry.  To register, call 800-237-6242 or visit  Workshop fee is $449 (or $399 for early-bird registration before .February 26).  For more info, contact Doc Moore at 843-918-1475.


All Sports Training Regimen, March 3 to May 14:  Do you have what it takes to survive the All Sports Training Regimen? Training will be conducted by NETA certified personal trainers from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 3 through May 14.  This intense program is geared toward young men and women, ages 11 to 17.  The All Sports Training Regimen will consist of a variety of strength and conditioning exercises, but also will incorporate agility drills, flexibility stations, and mental toughness!  Registration continues through March 2.  For more information, contact Edwin Boyzo at 843-918-1472.


A.M. Fitness Program:  This low-impact exercise program is designed for individuals with disabilities and special needs.  This program will give participants the opportunity to work out, interact with others, take part in a group activity and have fun!  Registration continues through February 8, with classes every Tuesday and Thursday, 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., from February 10 through May 14.  Fees:  $8 City Resident / $15 Non City Resident.  For more information, contact 918-1469 or

Cardio and Abs:  This is a high intensity workout that will focus on core strength and cardio. Class will meet Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 – 1:45 pm.  Drop-In Fees: $4 City Resident / $10 Non-City Resident.  Punch Cards can be used, fees $28.00 City Resident/$50.00 Non-City Resident.  For more information, contact 918-1465.




Sign up now for swim lessons at Canal Street Pool!  Water safety is a skill that saves lives.  Registration begins on Thursday two weeks prior to the start of class, or call 918-1476 or 918-1463 for more information.  Swim lessons are available for all ages.

Infant/Toddler Swim Class Age: Six months to three years


Infant/Toddler – The American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics builds swimming readiness by emphasizing fun in the water.  Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and more. **Special Requirements:  An adult must accompany the child in the water, and swim diapers are required for those children who are not potty-trained.


Pre-School Swim Class Age: Three – Five years


Pre-School 1 - This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  It is for non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable putting their face in the water.


Pre-School 2 - This class is for children who are comfortable in the water, can put their face in,

but are not yet swimming or floating (front and back) on their own.


Pre-School 3 - This class is for children who are very comfortable in the water, can front and back float for at least 5 seconds with NO assistance, and are swimming on their own with NO assistance or floatation device.


Youth Swim Classes Age:  Six-12 years


Level 1 – This class is for children with minimal or no water experience.  Non-swimming children who are not yet comfortable with their face in the water belong in this class.


Level 2 – This class is for children with some water experience who are comfortable putting their faces in the water, but are not yet swimming on their own.


Level 3 – This class is for children who can swim and float unassisted on both the front and back, but are just beginning to work on strokes.


Level 4 – This class is for children who can swim front and back crawl for 15 yards and tread water for at least 30 seconds.


Level 5 – This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of front and back crawl, as well as 15 yards of breaststroke and elementary backstroke.




Water exercise is an excellent way to a fit and healthy body!  The added resistance of the water offers the opportunity to improve flexibility and muscle strength without joint stress.  Our certified water exercise instructors will take you through exercise in the water, often using buoyant equipment for balance, stabilization and added resistance.  Whatever an individual’s fitness goals or therapeutic needs, they can be met with the right mix of classes. Aqua Power:   This class is a great, low-impact way to focus on improving your muscle tone and cardio.  Class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are necessary. This class is designed for all levels. Class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m. Water shoes strongly recommended, but not required.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents and $10 for non-city residents or an 18-visit punch card is $32 for city residents and $55 for non-residents.


Hyrdroaerobics:  The perfect blend of water and workout!  This is a low impact, fast paced aerobic program designed to improve heart-lung capacity, flexibility and muscular strength.  The class is held in the shallow end of the pool, so no swimming skills are needed.  Class meets from 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday.  Evening classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 – 6:45 p.m.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $10 for non-city residents or get an 18-visit punch card for $32 for city residents or $55 for non-city residents.


Jivin’ Joints:  This class has been reformatted to add some cardio fitness to the range of motion exercises performed in the Gentle Joints class. This is the perfect transition from injury into our more intense water fitness classes. Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15 – 11:00 a.m.  Drop-in fees are $5 for city residents, $10 for non-city residents or get an 18-visit punch card for $32 for city residents or $55 for non-city residents.
